More than any other time in a business or personal relationship challenging situations uncovers an individual and organization's true character. Its no secret we are in challenging times right now. This is when it is most important to be men and women of character. Anyone can talk the talk. Walking the walk is a different case that defines who we are as a person. As entrepreneurs character plays a large role in our long-term success.
Like you, over the years I have experienced the good and bad in people during difficult times. People tend to forget their commitments, rationalize and not take personal responsibility for their own actions. How we act in difficult times not only impacts our relationships today but tomorrow as well.
As I read and hear the news about Bernie Madoff, John Thain and others that have made extremely poor choices (and in some cases criminal) I cannot help but think of their lack of character. What possess people to do such things? The obvious conclusion is greed however there are no doubt other factors. While these are extreme cases what about other examples like keeping our word on pricing, a shipment date, a payable, a promised phone call or "you name it." They all help to erode our character if we do not keep our word and commitments.
While these times are indeed difficult they will pass. Better days are ahead and we have to keep that in mind. How we conduct ourselves during this period may very well define our future. Our family, friends and clients will remember how we acted during the difficult times. I urge everyone (including myself) to keep this in mind.
In closing I offer the words of Thomas Paine who stated, "Character is much easier kept than recovered".
Happy March - - - in like a lion, out like a lamb. I am ready for the latter!
