Employee Study Shows Low Turnover & Job Satisfaction Keys to Growing Your Business
Written by Gregg Marzano
Employee turnover, diversity among co-workers and toxic relationships are costing employers time and money.
A leading workplace training provider, specializing in team development, NorthStar Adventure at Dutch Springs, recently commissioned a study to examine the effects of a disengaged workforce on today’s businesses. The 12 week study conducted by Empire Research Group, researched and documented current trends facing business owners and managers as they attempt to lead an increasingly diverse workforce. “The information in the study provides a dialogue to address today’s workforce issues,” commented Michael Stershic, President Lehigh Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau. “An understanding and acceptance of diverse cultures and workplace behaviors are important to all types of business. Those organizations that can motivate and lead employees that differ in age, culture, race and lifestyle generally will be more successful,” he added.
Information outlined in the study showed 60% of Pennsylvania workers dissatisfied with their job. The results were highest among generation Y (born after 1980) workers but even baby boomers, those workers born between 1946 and 1964, (55%) are becoming more and more disgusted with their job. People living in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania are the most disgruntled (less than 41 percent say they are satisfied with their current job), and people living in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico were most likely to whistle while they work (56 percent reported being satisfied). “Employers need to develop high functioning teams if they expect to grow their companies,” says Jason Chartrand Director of NorthStar Adventure at Dutch Springs. “Too often managers invest heavily in specific job skills training and forget that their employees did not pick their co-workers. In essence, they are strangers and need to develop trust levels, communication techniques, and teamwork skills. This type of training will benefit the business in the long-term with reduced turnover, increased productivity and reduced absenteeism,” offered Chartrand.
In certain industries, seventy percent of all hourly employees turnover each year, the cost to replace an employee earning minimum wage is estimated at $4000 - $6000. Investing in an employee by providing leadership and teamwork training can increase moral, develop loyalty to the business and in return reduce hiring costs.
