Enjoy the Journey! ? ! ? ! ?
Written by Jeff Tintle, Sr.

Being an entrepreneur can be a challenging proposition.  Whether you're a newbie or a veteran running your own business can be trying at times.  With that stated, so can anything.  What it comes down to is your attitude, your passion and whether or not you are "enjoying the journey".

For 8 years I worked for an entrepreneur in Carmel, Indiana a suburb of Indianapolis (Baker Hill Corporation).  Baker Hill developed and delivered solutions for Banking with expertise in Small Business and Commercial Lending.  Overall it was a terrific experience and the couple that owned and led the company (Mark and Karen Hill) are talented and special people.

I mention this because every month we had a company meeting where all 200 of us assembled in a large conference room.  We even had our remote people dial into the meeting.  Each of my senior management peers provided an update against our company scorecard and highlighted our victories and acknowledged our defeats.  It was the one time in the month where we collectively got together to measure our progress against our goals.  At the end of the meeting Mark would always wrap things up.  It was typically on a very positive note.  No matter what was shared that day Mark would always close with the following comment, "enjoy the journey".  I enjoyed hearing that every month as I subscribed to that philosophy.

"Enjoy the journey".  Obviously these three words can either be a statement or a question.  Today I am expressing it both ways for two reasons; happiness and success.  Without sounding too much like "Dr. Phil" I sincerely believe if you do not "enjoy the journey" you will neither be successful or happy.  Whether you are an entrepreneur or not if you do not "enjoy the journey" life will be a drag, an exercise in just getting by.  This does not mean everyday will be a picnic nor does it mean you will always close every deal, nail every opportunity or have the perfect solution to every problem.  What it does mean is overall you will enjoy what you are doing and approach each day with passion.

I encourage everyone to take our poll this month.  Are you enjoying your journey?  If not what will you do to change the situation?  I welcome your feedback.  You can email me your thoughts on this (or any subject) at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .
